Shingles

nantucket A-24.1 LayoutArchitectural Digest is featuring several shingle-style homes on their site celebrating the classic New England architecture. Above is a home on Nantucket (because everyone under the New England sun was there this past weekend for Figawi), designed by Jacobsen Architecture. The home, made up of 12 cottages, overlooks Nantucket Harbor and was featured in the magazine in June 2014. Another favorite home done by the architectural firm is this one in Rockport, Maine.

(Another) Coast with the Most

image1 image2 image3 image4Just returned from the most enjoyable weekend in Oregon. We adventured down the coast to find a gray but grand coastline, reminiscent of New England but standing on its own west coast grandeur. The Oregon Pinot Noir was a constant fixture throughout the weekend, as were the locals adorned in their hipster ensembles. Above are photographs from Cannon Beach and Indian Beach, about 1.25 hr south of Portland. Looking forward to sharing more this week!

"On the Surface"

Screen Shot 2015-05-08 at 9.11.16 AMIt was such a treat to join Barbara Vaughn (affectionately known as "BV" to her family and friends), at the Dolby Chadwick Gallery in San Francisco last evening. The reception celebrated the commencement of her exhibition titled "On the Surface" at the gallery, showcasing a new collection of her exquisite photographs. From her travels across the globe (such as the Greek isle of Paros to Martha's Vineyard to Amsterdam), BV has captured the reflections of various bodies of water that come to life in the form of abstract patterns and shapes, akin to those you might find in the work of Pablo Picasso or perhaps Henri Matisse. They are truly statement pieces that will leave the admirer inquisitive and transformed to a state of bliss. Be certain to view her work at Dolby Chadwick Gallery, on display until May 30th. Bravo, BV!! xx

Above: A personal favorite, Apokopes 1, a piece influenced by the modernist sculptor Alexander Calder.

Welcome "Home"

I'm giving a huge hometown welcome from the west coast to especially Team Alvimedica, who arrived last evening, placing 5th in leg six. Although not their best result or best leg of the race, there is something particularly memorable about sailing that leg from Itajaí, Brazil to Newport, Rhode Island (over 5,000 nautical miles). It's a proud day for us locals and the sailing community.

The Met

114820482.jpgAll eyes this morning are no doubt on the fashion and fun from last evening's Met Gala. It was hard for me to find a dress I liked; there was too much skin and fuss for my liking. (Although some of the few standouts in my book included Sienna Miller, Julianne Moore and Jordan Dunn). Instead, I'll find my fascination in the above photo from the Met Gala in 1960. Guests are seen dancing in front of a statue of Aphrodite at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Steele Point Estate

I was poking around online looking at private islands for sale (why not?) and found the above. I recognized it immediately. I distinctly remember sailing around Steele Point in the BVI with my family and being enchanted by this home. It reminded me of Swiss Family Robinson with all of the stairs and disjointed structures in the midst of lush greenery. We had a great southerly breeze that day and we ended up anchoring around the leeward side of the island that evening, snorkeling nearby the next morning.
